Rep. Mazzochi to Serve on Childhood Cancer Research Board

Springfield…State Representative Deanne M. Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has
been appointed to serve on the Illinois Childhood Cancer Board.  Mazzochi’s responsibilities on the Board will
include making recommendations for pediatric cancer research grants backed by
the State of Illinois.  

“Any cancer diagnosis is
devastating, especially when a child is involved.  Illinois has many oncology centers and
tremendous organizations researching childhood cancers.  It leads the Midwest in making pediatric
cancer diagnoses.  I look forward to directing
funds towards innovative research and finding support for needed clinical
studies to help accomplish this life-saving work.  New therapies can help both our own state’s
children suffering from dreadful diseases, and the nation’s,” stated Mazzochi.  “We also should encourage fundamental
research on oncology models to design new cures, and ensure that Illinois has the
most advanced and promising research centers and resources.”

With data suggesting nearly 12,000
children in the US will be diagnosed with cancer this year, the effort to
expedite the research childhood cancer has become a priority. Mazzochi’s
private sector experience includes review of new pharmaceuticals and clinical
trials, including in pediatric cancer.  This
position will put her in the position to make recommendations for grant funding
for pediatric cancer research.  

The Childhood Cancer Research
Board reviews grant applications; makes recommendations; and consults with the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) in grant making from funds within
the Childhood Cancer Research Fund to public or private not-for-profit entities
that conduct childhood cancer research.  The
Childhood Cancer Research Fund receives most of its funding from voluntary
charitable contributions donated by Illinoisans who check the applicable box on
their state income tax return. Mazzochi joins 10 other members on the board,
including the Director of the IDPH, qualified medical professionals with
expertise in pediatric cancer, and bipartisan colleagues in the General
