Mazzochi Hosting FREE ‘Shred It and Forget It’ Event with Westmont Chamber during Annual Trick or Treat Trail

Westmont…State
Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) is hosting a FREE ‘Shred It &
Forget It’ event on Saturday, October 19th in collaboration with the
Westmont Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Westmont during the annual
Trick or Treat Trail from 10:30 AM until 1:30 PM. The event will be held in the
parking lot located at 1 North Cass Avenue in Westmont.

“This paper shredding event is the perfect opportunity to dispose
of sensitive documents people don’t want to toss in their regular trash or
recycling bin,” said Mazzochi. “Identity theft is a real issue, and safe
document disposal is one way to prevent it. I want to thank the Village of
Westmont, the Westmont Chamber, and the Westmont Special Events Corporation for
partnering with me on this event.”

Those wishing to take advantage of the shredding service
should enter the lot off Burlington Avenue (Cass Avenue will be closed) and
look for reserved parking in the drop-off zone. Please follow directional signs
posted at the event site. According to Mazzochi, once documents are
shredded, they will be recycled.

Documents suitable for shredding include any paper mail that
includes personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers or
account information. There is a limit
of two bags/boxes of paper documents per vehicle
. No electronics will be accepted, and drivers should remain
in their cars while their items are unloaded by event volunteers. Drivers who
wish to watch their documents as they are fed into the shredder may park in
designated spots. The shredding event is for residential use only.

Better Money Habits has published recommendations on how
long important documents should be kept. They recommend:

  • Keeping utility bills, deposits, and withdrawal records for one month,
  • Keeping monthly statements and paystubs for one year,
  • Keeping supporting tax documentation for up to 7 years, and
  • Keeping major financial transactions and tax returns permanently.

While taking advantage of the shredding service, Mazzochi’s
office will also participate in the “Trick or Treat Trail,” by offering treats
and contests for participating children. For additional information about this
event, please contact Rep. Mazzochi’s district office at (630) 852-8633.
